Gates Pledges More for Polio Vaccine

Bill Gates pledged $100 million to fight polio at the World Economic Forum in Davos, PC World reports:

While many of those infected with polio completely recover, in some it spreads to the spinal cord or brain leading to partial or complete paralysis. It is a disease that disables more often than it kills. Globally, around 10 million people are estimated to live with the effects.

Gates’s focus on specific diseases like this has its critics; many argue that health issues in the developing world require a more holistic approach rather than tackling specific diseases. Clearly Gates is not backing down from his strategy.
